Week 12- Diary

I have been completing my final drafts for the front  cover, 2 double page spreads and the contents page for my music magazine. I used photoshop to create these, and it was important that i looked back at the research i had done previously, in preperation for designing the magazine. i took into consideration the different sell lines that would be suitable, and also which colour scheme would look the most effective and tie in with the music genre of Indie/Rock. I tried to use as many photos as possible and made sure my model was wearing a different outfit on the front cover, compared to the outfit she is wearing on the double page spreads. This then highlights that the article is different from the front cover and reinforces the thought of having an insight into their life through the interview.
I made sure I included the masthead on all the pages to make the magazine more continuous and also included different ways of recieving the information from the magazine such as social networking sites and also the magazines website.
I am pleased with the end results and am therefore hoping my final magazine pages will be very similar to these. I think that i have formed a good outline of what i want my magazine to look like and this will work in my favour when i come to make the real thing.

Final Contents page draft

I also created my final draft in photoshop and decided to carry on the colour scheme and outfits from the front cover page. I also used various other images to represent what else is featured within the magazine. I found it useful to create this in photoshop because i can see exactly how its going to look and what my final product will be based around.

Final Second double page spread draft

My second double page spread includes my article and includes two main images of the interviewee. I continued on the colour theme of greys, blacks and whites to make the magazine flow more.

Final draft Double page spread

For my double page spread final draft i used an image to take up the background and then added  a quote ontop. This will be an introduction page before the double page with my article on. I included the page number and magazine name to the page to continue the theme throughout.

Final front cover draft

I have now completed my final draft for my front cover. I created this in photoshop and used various different effects to create the look i wanted. I kept a colour scheme of red, white and black and tried to keep with similar fonts throughout. Below is my front cover final draft.

Week 11- Diary

This week i created my Article draft which will eventually be used on my double page spread. I had to think of suitable questions to ask the artist and also answers for the questions. The questions had to relate to the topic of music and how they entered the career, what inspired them and if they had planned it etc. It had to be written as a conversation as it is meant to be someone interviewing them and asking the questions face to face. Therefore i had to include the actions or soudns they made aswell as speech, such as laughter. This will help me when i come to write my final draft as i can look back and see what i originally wrote and what i want to include in the real interview.

Article Draft

Hot on the music scene this year is the outstanding Lucia Pisapia. Starting off in the music industry can often be a struggle and many don’t succeed. However, this girl has made a flying start and couldn’t have entered the industry at a better time. With the rest of 2011 to showcase her talents, we are very excited to see what she brings to the table and Signed are getting the first exclusive interview with the girl herself.

So firstly, I’de like to say thank you for coming to speak to us today. It’s a privilege to finally meet you!
Thank you for having me! Im really excited for my first real interview!

Now, we want to know, have you always aspired to be a musician and choose this career move?
Good question. I’ve always had a passion for music and that can never leave you, so I think I was always determined to do my best and become as successful in the music career as possible. Even when I was a toddler I was dancing and singing around and my parents had me entered into every talent contest there was! (Laughs) This probably made me more in love with performing and made me want to pursue it as a full time job.

Sounds like you’re very dedicated to music! Do you write all your own music by yourself? And if so, how do you find inspiration?
I write all my own songs and started to when I was in my teens. Song writing is a very tedious process as you cant just sit down and say ‘right, today im going to write a hit record’ as that generally never happens. It often comes to my mind at the strangest of times and I have to quickly jot down all my ideas in my little notebook, ready for when I go to the studio.

When you do find some spare time, what do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies?
I love to catch up with my friends and family. Sometimes its hard to keep in contact with them all the time when im travelling around the country. It can also get quite lonely so its nice to have their company when im free. I also have a lovely golden retriever at the family home that i had to leave so i like to spend time with him as much as i can!

Sounds like your very family orientated. Do you think your fans see the real you when you perform? Or do you have a seperate alter ego on stage like many artists?
On stage i try to be myself as much as possible, so the fans can get to know me and start to like me for my real personality. I think its important they see what i'm like in real life as i dont want to be seen as a diva and someone who has a very split personality. I like to stay true to my fans as i see them more as friends than followers.

Well we all love you as a person! You have a very unique fashion sense and are looked up to now as not only an amazing artist, but also a style icon. Have you ever considered releasing your own clothing range?
Well there are no definates yet but i am looking into starting my own brand or even having a chain of boutiques located in London's famous Brick Lane and Camden Lock. But we shall have to wait and see what the future holds. I like to express my opinions through the clothing i wear and it also reflects my music too, so im delighted that people like it and would like to also recreate some of my looks.

Now your album has just become number 1 in the UK, have you thought about maybe going international and taking on USA?
Im not sure about going international yet (laughs). It seems very daunting! America has produced some amazing artists and that will be hard to compete with! However, if this year goes well, they could be a chance of spreading to further than the UK which would be exciting, but very nerve racking. You never know if people are going to take to the songs and your style of music so its always a risk trying something new.

Well the UK took to your songs straight away so no doubt the rest of the world will too. We hear you have just released your tour dates and they sold out within 24 hours! You must be over the moon?
Im so excited for the tour! I cant believe how many dedicated fans i have already after being in the industry only a few months! It's so overwhelming to know i have so much support behind me. The set and layout for the tour is just stunning and the fans are in for a real treat! Its going to be so much fun being on the road with the team for so long. They have turned into my best friends and my second family now so it should be great fun.

Well thankyou for speaking to us at Signed today Lucia and we wish you all the best for the future and the tour and hope to hear from you again soon!
Anytime! Thankyou for having me, its been a great experience! Hopefully speak to you nearer the time of the tour for more info!

Week 10- Diary

This week i created my drafts for the front cover, double page spread and contents page. I created the front cover design by hand and i recorded myself drawing it and then sped up the video which can be found on my blod, to demonstrate that i drew it myself.
I then created my double page spread draft on photoshop because i have an image as the background so it was easier to work out where to position things on photoshop straight away. I used CamStudio to record what i was doing so you can clearly see the different ideas i chose and why i decided to do what i did.
Finally, i drew my contents page by hand and then scanned in the image onto my blog so you can see how i plan to have it. I looked back on different contents pages already out to give me inspiration and so i had an idea on how they are generally layed out and what features they always include.

Double page spread draft

I have created my draft on Photoshop to roughly show how i would like the double page spread to look. I used CamStudio to help me present this and this proves that i created the draft myself.

Contents draft

I drew my contents my hand and have scanned it in to prove that i did it. I made sure i included the typical features of a contents such as page numbers, photos and features and reviews.

Signed tutorial

I then created a tutorial using CamStudio to show how i created one of my ideas for my Masthead.

Masthead designs

I have designed four different possible mastheads for my magazine with my chosen name 'Signed'. I have tried completly different designs to make sure i have tried all options and that the final one i use is definately the right choice. I stuck to the colour scheme of black, white and red and made sure that they all fit with the genre of Indie/Rock. Below are my different designs.

Week 6-Diary

Week 6- Diary

This week i have completed my colour connotations and name designs. I produced this on a Scribd on my blog and they are closely linked together.

For the colour connotations, i chose to concentrate on red, white and blue as these are the traditional British colours. I found out from my mood board research that the patriotic colours are very popular throughout this particular genre and therefore i thought it would be useful to consider using these colour texts. I explained why i thoguht each colour looked good, or how i may need to adapt them to make them look better.

I also looked at different front styles to see how they looked. I liked the rough and scribbly text because i think it best fits with the rock/indie theme as its very carefree and messy. However i did compare other styles aswell to make sure i had considered all options.

Colour connotations

I have created a Scribd to present the different colours i have looked at for my magazine colour. i have based this around the images i found on my mood board with the union jack theme. I have also included name designs and fonts within this and looked at what i may like to use for my front cover and contents pages.

I have written all my name ideas and why I think they are appropriate. I have justified and given reasons for choosing these names as they either link to my target audience, or the genre of the magazine.

Week 5- Diary

Week 5- Diary

This week i created my Audience profile which is a clear outline of what my target audience is, what my ideal target audience would be and also includes the results of the poll on my blog and how this will help me when creating my magazine. I created this on powerpoint and then uploaded it onto a slideshare.

Identifying my target audience is a good idea because i can always refer back to it, and it give me a clear idea of who i want to the magazie to be aimed at and appeal to at all times. My ideal target audience is hopefully similar to my target audience is, and this mwill make it easier to design the magazine as i know who i am hoping will read it. Therefore i can try and make it appeal to my ideal audience as much as possible. The results i found out from my blog poll were very useful as they told me what people in my age range think about magazines and what they typically expect to feature in it. This now has given me information to work around and make sure i try and stick to, to create a succesful magazine.

Week 4- Diary

Week 4 -Diary

This week i have created my proposal and mood board. These have both helped me understand what i want to do in my magazine and what i want to achieve.

I created my proposal in powerpoint and then uploaded it into slideshare. I included all the information needed for my new magazine and discussed everything in detail. I spoke about my target audience and how i am desiging the magazine around them and what they would be interested in. I also thought about my front page and the images and colours i will use to make it different from other Indie/ Rock magazines. I am pleased with my proposal as i can always look back at it if i get confused or unsure on how i originally wanted to magazine to look or be like.

My mood board has become very useful as i am now starting to think about my photoshoot and what sort of model i will want. I am also using it for inspiration for the outfits to be worn and the different poses i would like to make it unique. I think the colours and patterns are going to be the main focus on my page as i have seen on my mood board various different ways to dress a scene. I will regularly look back at this when i stuck for ideas for my photoshoot.

School Magazine

19th September 2011

The task was to create a school magazine and make sure it was aimed at a particular target audience. We had to make a front cover and contents page for the magazine. I created a draft idea on paper first before creating the real copy in photoshop.

Below you can see a copy of my first draft:

I then re-created my design in photoshop and added effects, colour and photos to the magazine

Below is my complete magazine made in photoshop:

My target audience is Year 7 students. This is because they are new to the school and may find the magazine interesting and useful to them as they are getting used to the new environment. They may think of it as a guide during the first few weeks of school. The theme of the magazine is ‘Back to school’ and therefore provides the new Year 7’s with plenty of information about what Haydon has to offer them.

I decided to the colours around the uniform colours, as it’s recognisable and looks professional and draws the reader in at the same time. The contrast of the dark blue and the bright yellow makes certain parts of the magazine stand out more which is the effect I was looking for. I also included some text in white because having too much navy blue and yellow would make it hard to read and the colours would merge together and wouldn’t look effective.

The font I decided to use for most of the text is impact, because its bold and easy to read quickly. This is very suitable for a magazine as I want people to read it quickly and want to pick it up and read into it. However I did use another font called Edwardian script which was older fashioned to compliment well with the big bold texts. I only used this font on subheadings and smaller text. But it is still easy to wear as I made the text bold.

My cover models are a year 7 boy and girl, to emphasise that the magazine will appeal to both genders and other people their age. They both look positive and happy which is to represent how helpful the magazine is to new students. They are both wearing uniform which looks very smart and formal and sets an example for possible readers.

On the contents page I decided to use an image of the well known Haydon stag. This is the Haydon logo so the readers can familiarise themselves with it and relate to it. Across the bottom of the page I have included an image of the new building at Haydon.  The image of the building links well to the target audience as it will help them to orientate themselves when around the school. It also matches well with the rest of the page and the colours match well.

I also placed some of my own images on the pages such as the pencil on the contents page and the megaphone on the title. The megaphone links with the title ‘Shout’ as the words are coming from it. I chose the name shout as I think many year 7’s are energetic and enthusiastic and shout sums it up well. It’s also short and snappy which will make it catchier. The pencil underlines the contents heading and links the magazine back to school and the traditional school items you would expect to see in a magazine.
Overall, I think I have created a successful school magazine and have considered my target audience throughout. I have made sure it links with the school well and is interesting for possible readers.
